Five JCSD Scholars Made History by Conferring Associate Degrees!
JCSD would like to salute and honor the following dual enrollment students for their accomplishments in earning three academic certificates (General Education, Math and ELA, and Liberal Arts) in addition to earning an associate degree in liberal arts and/or an associate in science: Marlena Benson, Mikayla Ferguson, Faith Macherione, Tamia Miller, and Celine Robinson.
We would also like to congratulate the following scholars for earning one or more academic certificates: Gabrielle Chaney, Angelica Chavez, Farrah Doe, Deveigh Ford, Jeremy Givens, Samara Gibbs, Daniella Landeros, and Gabriel Chaney. Also, while earning various credentials, these following students made the “Dean’s List” by earning all A’s: 1st Semester-Da-Jean Biggerstaff, Gabrielle Chaney, Kendell Dinkins, Samara Gibbs, Jeremy Givens, Denasia Haynes, Kelsey Hipp, Shanena James, Eunice Mack, Imani Patterson, and Amiya Richardson. Congratulations to the following students who made the Dean’s list for second semester: Gabrielle Chaney, Farrah Doe, and Samara Gibbs.
The 22-23 theme for JCSD is “moving from impossible to possible!” Who would have thought it was possible to earn an academic certification from college before becoming a senior in high school? Who would have thought it was possible to earn multiple academic certificates and an associate degree before walking across a stage to receive your high school diploma? Despite these impossibilities, JCSD scholars have made them possible. These scholars triumph and persevered through impossible situations including Covid-19, limited course selection, technology issues, achieving high school requirements, working, participating in sports, completing CTE requirements, applying for scholarships and various universities, and even earning CDL permits. Students seeking associate degrees leverage limited course selection by enrolling in the Technical College of the Lowcountry (TCL), University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB) and/or Columbia International University (CIU) simultaneously. Five JCSD scholars made history by conferring associate degrees.
This historical and pivotal movement has given our scholars early access to higher education while equipping them to be competitive as they have gained knowledge and experiences through rigorous coursework. These high school scholars have mastered how to survive college and prepare themselves as life-long learners. While leaping boundaries and overcoming impossible obstacles, these students have demonstrated a level of commitment that will not only change their lives, but their families and community as well.
Dr. Murphy affirms that the success of this program is due to a collaborative effort between the partnership of JCSD, USCB and TCL. We are also grateful for our adjunct professors: Mrs. Velyuthan, Mr. Asari, and Mr. Coccia who deliver instructions on our campus and online to ensure our students are successful. Barrack Obama says it best: “The Audacity of Hope.” Our scholars have thrusted beyond hope by moving from impossible to possible by anchoring themselves as life-long learners through their electrifying dedication and commitment.
