WATCH: JC CATE's 'Lights Out' Showcase

Our Jasper County CATE Center Pathways conducted a case study on the considerations and preparations necessary for handling a "Lights Out" scenario. Our scholars performed admirably, demonstrating their preparations for survival. They discussed the coordination and mobilization of federal, state, and local government agencies, and even explored the preservation of data and network resources.

hi I'm Dr Stephanie Hart and I'm the director here at jck and tonight is our annual showcase our students have done an amazing job of being able to tell people how to survive in the event of a storm any type of storm they have a valuable information survival kits survival guys off things that you should have on hand and things that you can do to survive and of course we're culminating tonight with a meal that you can cook on the grill so that you don't have to go hungry during the storm please please enjoy what our students have prepared here tonight so this room right now is showing us how uh everybody cooperates with each other like the government will cooperate with FEMA or local businesses will cooperate with uh they will cooperate with them as well they'll cooperate with um with Coast whatever uh yeah the national yeah the National Guard cooperate with the National Guard to make sure that everything is on time everything's going according to plan and everything is going on so they relay messages throughout each other and if you look here this is just so this is basically an example of what you would need this is an example of a grocery store this is how with somewhat look or you know a decently depicted example of state of emergency this is obviously them transporting through traffic  it yeah and this right here is where we can tie in uh the class of logistics yes because this is where we have transportation and also delivering Supply is like I was saying they're like they help out with everything so FEMA is an you see in the United States they often collaborate with uh forces such as the National Guard uh they collaborate with City officials and local businesses um for example this right here is an example of the National Guard um made mostly by Legos and right here we have let's say uh this is where things are being transported this evacuation and over here we have this is this this this would be city of Britain yeah so basically you got people over here doing construction you have a bridge you got someone doing things you have a local business right here the man fell over it's okay all right so this is what this is the layout of how it would look if there was a state of emergency for some kind of natural disaster if you come over here on you have uh I believe this is the I believe so this is like I think uh this is the police station and this is a grocery store the parking lot this is a this is the local businesses right here now local businesses they cooperate with FEMA and cooperate with a lot of the military stuff once it's going on so a lot of the time what most local businesses would do is they would to save a lot of their product and then try and get back to the community as much as they can during the time of need they also can do a lot more stuff such as like set up some type of fundraiser of some kind you know do stuff like that stuff for the mhm and over here we got um materials that we can use while we are in um such a time of need okay so you have the food games dominoes you know for entertainment you medicine very important during the time of the genuinely very important during the time of me you don't have medicine make sure you get that on your list water stock up on that oh it's stock up on that bandages or first aid kit that can also come and helpful you never know what an injury that happened you also have an extra lighting Source because you will not know if your power will or will not go out you got to be here you have canned goods we just did a fundraiser on that by the way shout out to shout shout out to the student government you know um so this is like almost all of the Necessities I would say so we talking about the project of the light so how to do the before during after a disaster so this project may have helped the people with survival of how we complaining during after a disaster it's only to talking about this to survival and the communication the the requirements I was important during before and after talking about for this project this is stuff the model of the city after uh natural disaster so we have acting like a cracker like see how labor rates everything in for that way you can see the web page of the disaster requirement and survival so you can see everything out confirmation for before during and after a disaster like the communication the 5 foot Ur disaster disaster planning how to survive the exhaustion we obviously have information at about this you can ask you can also have this specifically information for Georgia so Carolina but disaster for expecting problems and the sensor for clicks or so you can you can see that you can see that in this way you can see our sensor in the correct light in Miami used to ask all that we can do in this project okay so this is for room is all about like survival and the tent is handmade you know so that we can have sleeping bags and things in it so like you get caught in the storm you know what to with the first aid to we also bought a generator you know just in case your power goes out and stuff like that we don't want none of that happening you got to invest in that the first thing kit right here my own first aid kit she got the bandages the yeah what's this this 1 is this 1 right here you got the okay aspect cleaning cleaning thing right here it's a wipe got the sticks just in case you know your hand or something advantageous cotton wool thing ice packs few tips the wipe off any excess blood or anything you got the fishing hooks a loss in the world or something you need do you got a quick single CPR you got a little fire starter right here my hands all that let's go mhm a little shovel no okay just a big something if you need to put a cap on inside of it or anything like that you got the Rope which we use to put this up right here all this rope and this is another first aid kit that you've seen over there okay we got sleeping bags and aluminum aluminum uh blanket oh we can you know so it's basically survival of the fitness around here so thank you very much all right twister cow backing up but tell me what this room's about is like all of this is like natural disasters but like we made like art like we just be creative in here mhm behind me there's like Tomatoes Snow blizzards right here and this is like the pandemic area working and earthquake hurricane and we got like a little trivia like game on on the laptop okay like some videos of like sizes thank you and that 1 packet that's a complete meal the you have the water like certain date and things could get stuck in your Airway and a lot of people don't know that these are the different uniforms you wear the black ones you see at basketball or football games and most likely the color guard will be wearing that with the big flags um this 1 we have you don't wear those but in the Marine Corps they usually wear those for like harsh weather um the green 1 right here on Wednesdays and oxy food is where those every Wednesday and we do inspections and inspections basically we look over your uniform because if you do it every Wednesday they teach you discipline cuz it's like it gives a routine we don't wear those but since that's green camouflage is the camouflage to the grass and trees in my deck but in light of time it's like I said the desert you wouldn't wear that the camouflage never work as well so you'll go with the lighter on the you ready after I've heard the question all right let's see hold on now we apologize so so in terms of what we said today my mission for y'all is to home and make a incident response plan so when so when natural disasters like this come you already be ready so you won't be fumbling and going to the store and buying stuff when everything is all up lines and fill up your tank you want to be yeah thank you hello welcome to the health science pathway I hope you learned something new thank you hello this is health science and health science we're just giving out first aid kits and they're talking about Narcan Alternatives basically things to do things you need during the survival of a storm you don't have um over there is Narcan trying kids and then these are the first 8 kids this is this is like if you're in a car accident or like puncture with bleeding you just help stop really quickly you're going to get this so you can't no more wrap it around you get this twist twist twist twist and then latch it and keep it there until emergency response will come but let's say you don't have this and you can use like a for like a bed sheet or anything something that's sturdy and stable and you get this put it up under grab it pull it as hard as you can be like a phone not like a pencil or anything cuz that will break and then pull it and then twist and that should help stop it I'm going to explain by Narcan Narcan is used for and a bit now perks um and sadly they do nowadays have phenol in them so you're going to keep Narcan and if you're a woman in your purse um then your wallet or your pocket don't leave it in your car okay it's not going to work Narcan is a 1 1 Thing oh 1 thing only medicine so like after the 1 do is is done you're not going to be able to use it no more so you're going to put it in the nose make sure it's on all the way up there make sure it's in there for 10 seconds and the person is not breathing unresponsive the lips are blue and their eyes are not the same you're going to use Narcan like I said leave it in there for 10 seconds um make sure it's all the way in there and you're going to turn them away from you cuz Narcan do have a side effect of throwing up but not all the time but in case that person does wake up and start throwing up you're going to want them away from you and I and that's what I can't talk Welcome to our drone technology device house you well my name is and I will be a drone technology like how God please call me at all times please technology is having navigate land airspace and reach by reading charts such as this so by this this tells us when radio clearance different types of the facility and everything on what is it for this for example the Airfield across the street is um specific number is 3 J 1 signify okay that is Airport Courtney and started calling it by its original name Jones can use our GPS in a variety of Senses such as infrared thermal vehicle tracking night vision and surveying office so we so we need to be able to tell them where to go and the clearance is required to fly in case somebody says Wildfire temporary fire descriptions such as tfrs and often published to prevent recreational Johnson interfering with Public Safety aircraft operating in an area so with thermal as such as this as thermal infrared systems and this is just a variety of different ways we use drones right here it's basically showing different ways how people can be tracked like that's if it's dark and you can't see you can switch the camera to Thermal and infrared to show off human spiciness right here is different ways like so you could do like cuz now I'm coming in the future now different companies are using drones to deliver packages and different types of products firefighting like so now drones are in public in firefighting because it's being helped that it seems like a place that fires can't reach surveillance such as for example and so you have to walk around and say somebody with a camera or something you can use a drone from high up to survey them from using infrared thermal it doesn't matter it still works search and rescue so like in case people are trapped in like a Avalanche or lost in the wood after natural disaster or something search and rescue operations will use drones so to reach places that people can't reach as I said before vehicle tracking so let's say let's say for instance somebody stole your car right and you can't track them on foot you will have a drone to make the manually from your phone or which or for example some of my drones we have here only you got to do is press a Target on it and it will follow it until it's remained of its battery then return back once the battery is Made It Low applications for drones are current by the day they are used for emergencies search and rescue operations firefight and delivery supplies with vehicles can't trap as it is road condition or when obstacles are too great to get around Jones can be found and use an automated flight plan and they can even land us on some charges and continue working for days or weeks without human individual routine maintenance so for right here in this table is different types of drones we have such as this very smart right here such as the Scotty O2 and this and this right here is this Landing Pad we use this the landed where we don't have certain places land or where we take this is 1 of various models so you can see that this is 1 of our jobs we use for most most show and tells when the demonstrations we are at the second checkpoint are medical supplies here somewhere 104 College remote pilot certification students ages and up can legally again fly drones commercially for profit such as for for such as Varsity games and dream Varsity games in high school if the school wants to record it and post it on social media they can pay you to record it and post it online and you will make profit from it you see him do you see him ladies right here to help us practice more convention Aerospace maneuver safely and then adoro brace circuitry on this display table right there so these similarities right here they tell they tell us when flying in different air spaces flight patterns and everything up regular airplane but in drone case we have to know this so that way if we're operating near a Airfield with no improper prescription in there we all right on to that point what do we do now he's a manual over at quick enable the power switch labeled 1 the G in the right frequency copy at 24 operating so right now what we need to do is we need to set this charging handles right here so that way that the Drone can manually do operation so it's right here so weight classifications so but well as he just said he said we need to do a manual override so if you would like so you can press these numbers up in order by 1 2 and 3 go for it okay so press 1 up so it says on that screen see it in a timer just a bit after 18 17 16 15 14 12 I mean 11 10 876 5 4 3 2 1 the wind is too much and stuff in that Branch over your head we're going to have to land it's equipped with a light sensor though if you shot a light up on it it should drop the medicine that you need so are we doing here now so we have 1 of our payloads delivery so all we need to do now is everything okay everything fine and that could be it okay then it reporting because you can protect your data and information and keep everything safe from like hackers type of time my name is create an emergency kit protect your home stay in front informed know your evacuation Zone and stay connected to families or others you could um learn how to stay connected by using your phone computer you can email you can protect your home by securing windows and then doors with um store you could um protect your home from me you could protect your home but in case of any damages or other things you could stay connected with families and friends by emailing texting and you could also take a you could charge your phone before the storm and after background you could take a um portable charger in case of your phone tries to die emergency kits is if anything happens if you get hurt or a family or others that you see and this section is important because after your storm in case of any anything happens to your phone your data you could learn how to um protect your information online here's some 5 security um tips think before you you click use strong passwords set up 2 factors and more or multiply factors keep your assistance imported and use firewalls and antiviruses
