Ready to Return and Learn - Safely Re-Opening Schools Plan Frequently Asked Questions (Updated 7/3/2020)

1. When will school begin?

School will begin Monday, August 17, 2020, unless otherwise noted. Keep in mind that

Elementary students will report Monday thru Thursday; Friday will be a remote (virtual)

learning day; therefore, students will NOT report to school.

Elementary students will either report during the AM session (7:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.) or

the PM session (11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.).

Middle/High School students will either report A-Day (Monday & Wednesday) or B-Day

(Tuesday & Thursday); Friday will be a remote (virtual) learning day; therefore, students

will NOT report to school. Middle and High School hours are 8:00 a.m. – 3:45 p.m.

Will all students return to school August 17, 2020?

Pre-Kindergarten students will follow a specific daily schedule during the Week of August 10, 2020. This schedule will be provided by the teacher.

Only A-Day Middle School students will report to school Monday, August 10, 2020. Only A-Day High School students will report to school Monday, August 17, 2020.
How will my child be taught?

All students will be taught by a certified teacher. Students will be taught instruction face- to-face and remotely (virtual).
Will my child have a certified teacher?

Yes, all teachers are certified teachers.
Will my child have a computer?

Yes, all students will have access to a computer. Students in 3rd through 12th grades will bring their devices home daily and are expected to bring their device to school each day that they are on campus.
Will my child have access to Wi-Fi?

Yes, Wi-Fi access will be made available to students in 3rd through 12th grades.
How will breakfast and lunch be provided to my child if he or she is participating in remote (virtual) learning?

All Elementary students will return to school Monday, August 10, 2020. Some will come

during the AM session, and some will come during the PM session.

Breakfast and lunch will be delivered every Friday for the upcoming week to all students who decide to participate in remote (virtual) learning.

8. How will attendance be taken?

Attendance will be taken daily for face-to-face instruction and remote (virtual) instruction.

9. What will happen if COVID-19 cases continue to increase?

If COVID-19 cases continue to increase, JCSD will re-evaluate our instructional model and make the best decision for the safety of all students and staff.

10.What if my child misses the bus to school?

Bus transportation is limited; therefore, if a child misses the bus the parent/guardian is responsible for bringing the child to school and picking the child up from school.

11.Will my child be required to wear a mask while in school?

Yes, for the safety of your child and staff, all children will be required to wear a mask while in school and on the school bus.

12.How do I register my child to school?

Online registration will begin July 1, 2020 until July 17, 2020. Although, parents may register online after July 17, 2020, it is imperative that registration is completed early so that schedules can be finalized and students notified.

13.Will I, as an elementary parent, be permitted to escort my child to class

if my child is the identified sub-group to attend face-to-face?

No, due to the possible spread of germs within the school environment and to ensure the safety of all, parent will NOT be permitted to escort their child to class.

14.If my child is in Kindergarten, 1st, or 2nd grade will he or she be issued a

computer?

Kindergarten, 1st Grade, or 2nd Grade students will have access to a device at school, but will NOT be issued a device to take home daily.

15.Will students receive textbooks?

Textbooks will NOT be issued for at home use but will be available while in class. Many textbooks are online; therefore, students will be provided the necessary access codes for online reference.

16. When will band or cheerleading begin?

A date for Band and Cheerleading has not been established. However, when it is safe to begin, due to the increases in positive COVID – 19 cases, a date will be shared and publicized.

17. Will students who are interested in taking band receive instruments

from the school?

Yes, students who are interested in band will have an opportunity to request the use of district-owned instruments. The appropriate paperwork must be completed, prior to using any district-owned equipment. Further, the school will share a date and time for drive- thru pick-up options to obtain the instrument.

18. What if my child has health issues?

If your child has health issues, the parent/guardian is encouraged to select the BEST option for their child; Hybrid (Face-to-Face/Remote Learning or Remote (100% Virtual).

19. How will students be separated for the AM/ PM session at the

elementary level?

At this time, it is too early for us to effectively respond to this question because we do not have the necessary data to decipher how many students to anticipate for Virtual and how many students to anticipate for Hybrid. Upon receipt of this information as families complete the registration process, this response will be updated.

20. How will students be separated for A-Day/B-Day at the middle/high

school levels?

is adhering to the uniform requirements?

Uniforms will be available at the school levels for families who need uniform assistance. Principals will provide additional information in their Back-to-School Virtual Videos and Packets of information.

22. What are the choice options available for my child returning to school? Elementary (Child Development – 5th Grades)

23. Where can I find the transportation survey?

The transportation survey can be located on the district’s website at www.jcsd.net.

24. Where can I find the online registration form?

After the transportation survey is completed, a link will be available at the end of the survey for the online registration form.

25. Will all students be required to complete a transportation survey?

Yes, all students will be required to complete a transportation survey.

26. Will all students be required to complete a registration form?

Yes, all students will be required to complete a registration form. After the completion of the transportation survey, the online registration form will be available.

27. When will the Information Hotline become available?

The Information Hotline will be available the Week of July 13, 2020. More information will be posted online.

28. Are marching band students required to get a physical this year?

Yes, marching band students are required to get a physical.

29. With the current plan, how will athletes and band students get to practice after school from the opposite campus?

With the current plan, athletes and band students will have to travel to their respective locations for practices. Keep in mind, Middle/High School students are on campus ONLY 2 days out of the week and some come on A-day and some come on B-day. Therefore, coordinating after-school practice should include collaboration with all coaches because the same students will not be on campus daily. Further, social distancing must be adhered to for all groups. Groups should not be larger than 10.

30. Is there an option for families to be 100% virtual even if students are able to return to school with the current plan?

Yes, the current plan, as shared, provides for families to select the Hybrid Model (Face- to- Face/Remote Learning) or Remote Learning (Virtual). These are our two (2) choice options. It was also shared that with the Remote Learning Model (Virtual); lunch would be transported on Fridays for the upcoming week.

31.If a parent is not comfortable sending their child back to school what do they need to do to register for virtual school?

To register for virtual school, please complete as follows:

1.) Log-on to www.jcsd.net,
2.) Click on the tab for online registration (2nd Bullet on the left hand side in the pictures

scrolling at the top (working to make this much simpler),
3.) Read the directions,
4.) After reading the directions, complete the transportation survey first.
5.) At the end of the transportation survey, a link will appear for the online registration.
6.) Click on the link, create an account, and complete the registration process by filling in

the information per field or blank.
7.) When completing the transportation survey or online registration form, select the

option that you, as a parent, feel is best for your child; Hybrid or Virtual.
8.) As noted in the directions, if you experience any issues with the registration process,

The Week of July 20, 2020, our Virtual School Administrator will be reaching out to all parents/students who selected virtual school as the mode of instruction.

JCSD has a very robust virtual school model and we are elated to continue providing rigor and relevance as our certified teachers provide instructional content.

A NOTE OF UNDERSTANDING & ENCOURAGEMENT:
As a reminder, it is perfectly fine for a parent to feel uncomfortable in regards to sending their child back to school for face-to-face instruction, via the Hybrid model. More specifically, considering the pandemic in which we are living, it is understandable. As a result, JCSD understands that some parents may be apprehensive; therefore, JCSD has offered CHOICE to all parents, as requested by survey data. Therefore, JCSD encourages parents to select the BEST choice (Hybrid or Virtual) for your child. Whatever the choice, JCSD is committed and ready and willing to serve our children, safely! 32. What if my child can’t wear a mask all day?

If a child has difficulty wearing a mask for a long period of time, parents are encouraged to purchase a face shield for their child.

In addition, a parent may select the option of Virtual School rather than Hybrid.

33. If I am an elementary parent and I select the Hybrid Model, what do I do with my child when they get out of school 1⁄2 day because I work?

After care for elementary students will be available as follows:

1.) Boys and Girls Club

Locations: Hardeeville Elementary and Ridgeland Elementary Time: 2:30 p.m. – 5:45 p.m.
Availability: First come, First Serve Basis
Available Space: 50 – 60 Students
